Frequently Asked Questions
What is Open Focus?
Open Focus is a program of attention training.  Open Focus is a time-tested
method of attention training that can dramatically reduce stress related symptoms
and enhance well-being, using principles developed in the field of neurofeedback.
What do you mean by ATTENTION?
Attention is the process we use to control our awareness, it's direction, proximity
and scope.

Why is important for me to control my awareness, to control attention in a
flexible way?
Many symptoms of stress and much of the physiological, mental and behavioral
dysfunction arise out of being stuck in limited forms of attention.
Attention is the most basic behavior we engage in.  It organizes our physiology
which affects our emotions, thoughts and performance capacity.  Mastering
attentional flexibility by using the Open Focus technique is the fundamental way of
breaking the vicious circle of stress.
If we are aware of how we pay attention to life's events, we can avoid the physical,
emotional and mental symptoms of stress that many of us feel.
How can the Open Focus training program help me?

It will teach you how to recognize how you pay attention to life's events and how to
use alternate ways of paying attention which, in turn, will help you avoid stress
related symptoms and dysfunctions.  It teaches you how to relate differently to the
experiences in your life; a way that keeps you centered and balanced and feeling
good.  In other words, it helps to center and heal you physically and emotionally if
you are already experiencing stress related symptoms.  It will also help you maintain
a sense of well-being and promotes optimization of function.

Learning and practicing Open Focus leads to dramatic and long lasting changes in
several key areas that include:
  •        reduced stress and anxiety levels
  •        a state of alert tranquility and mindfulness
  •        restoring restful and natural sleep patterns
  •        dissolving physical and emotional pain
  •        expanded awareness
  •        enhanced creativity
  •        deepened intuition
  •        original perceptions and insights
How do I know if I will benefit from Open Focus?

For more than 30 years, Dr. Les Fehmi has been teaching Open Focus to his
clients.  He specializes in helping people who are interested in reducing their
physical, emotional and mental symptoms.  He also helps children and adults who
have been diagnosed with
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
In addition, he has been successful in
reducing the symptoms of autism.  If during the course of your day you find yourself
struggling to manage, then Open Focus can help you.
What symptoms does Open Focus help with?  How can I recognize that I
need Open Focus training?

The most general way of answering this question is to ask yourself if you are
struggling to manage your daily life.  If you answer yes, then the Open Focus training
can help you.  Unfortunately, everybody reacts to their environment in different ways
and it is difficult to stereotype or characterize globally.
Given any single unpleasant experience in life, one person may react by becoming
depressed, tired or frequently ill; another person may experience physical symptoms
such as stiff muscles, headaches or stomach cramps; another may become abusive
to his/her family; yet another may suffer panic attacks.  The list of possible symptoms
is quite long.  What is important to realize is if the way a person normally pays
attention to life goes unchecked symptoms will surface and accumulate to the point
where quality of life will be significantly degraded.
Typically, the impact of stress on our health grows without our awareness.  A
stress is cumulative, we are first made aware of our stress through our physical and
emotional symptoms which are our body's way of alerting us that we need a change.
Open Focus provides a vehicle for allowing our body to rest and restore normal
functioning.
Eventually, many of us get stuck in a fixed alert state no matter what the task or
experience we are facing.
This is dominant pattern of coping which is
common for most people.
How can I get started with Open Focus?

If you are local to Princeton, New Jersey, you can come in for a private
consultation or you may like to attend one of our
workshops.  If you live out of this
area, phone consultations are available.
If I live out of state, can I still learn the Open Focus method?

Yes! We can provide a home study course which contains a series of audio tapes
or compact discs, a study guide and reading materials to help you succeed.  We
have received many call from around the globe from people who have successfully
used our training materials.  As mentioned previously, we offer a series of workshops
which you may use to augment and accelerate your program.
How long will it take to see the benefit of your program?

It may take 12 to 24 weeks of listening to the CD's and following the program is
often sufficient to experience the program's benefits.  Continuing with daily practice
brings benefits and promotes peak performance and higher levels of awareness.
Will Open Focus make me too relaxed to function effectively in my busy
lifestyle?

No!  You will function even more effectively.  Open Focus training helps to free up
energy so that you can perform even better than you do now.  Dr. Fehmi has
successfully trained performing artists, athletes and professionals in demanding
fields.  You see, paying attention to life in a way that causes you to generate
symptoms consumes a lot of energy.  Furthermore, the less energy you have for your
everyday activities, the more energy you will spend trying to manage your life.  Open
Focus helps you reverse this spiraling process.
How does Open Focus help with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD and
ADHD)?

People struggling with ADD have the underlying stress and ingrained habits of
effort full and limited attention.  Open Focus increases their ability to engage in
effortless focus of their attention by expanding on their attentional styles.  They will
be relaxed, happy and able and willing to pay interested, effortless attention.
Can the Open Focus program be utilized for ADD while taking medication?

Yes.  Medication may be necessary in some cases for people to participate in
Open Focus.  However, our goal is to help our client get off the medication as
attention skills are developed.
How can I get started with Open Focus for ADD/ADHD?

Children and adults alike with ADD are stressed and stuck in limited forms of
attention.  The basic Open Focus CD's are useful for late teens and adults.  The
Princeton Biofeedback Centre specializes in the treatment of ADD using Open Focus
training and neurofeedack.  We also offer a one-hour seminar at our Centre.  Call us
for details and a free DVD on our Centre.
What differentiates Open Focus from other techniques?

Good question.  Through many years of research, Dr. Les Fehmi has developed a
proven method to help his clients enjoy a happier and more productive life.  While
many people are counseled on what they should do to feel better, Dr. Les Fehmi has
been quietly using his Open Focus technique to teach people
how to feel better and
optimize their well being
Remember, if it's
worth doing, it is worth
doing effortlessly in
